Features and uses of Hydraulic Power Packs

Hydraulic power packs are the core units of hydraulic systems that provide a unidirectional force by means of a unidirectional movement. A typical power pack consists of a motor, a reservoir and a series of hydraulic pumps or cylinders. Together, these three components generate a force that is strong enough to drive any machine. The degree of force generated by a specific type of cylinder will determine its applicability for different purposes.

The main components of a hydraulic pump are the barrel, the base, the cap, the piston and the seals. A specific variety of these pumps are the hydraulic cylinder tie rod design, which is very useful for low to medium power applications. In this variety, the cap of the cylinder is attached to the barrel by means of high threaded steel rods. They are more popular than other varieties because of their ease of disassembly and repair.

The various applications of these power packs are:
  • Construction machinery
Big and bulky construction machinery like bull dozers, excavators and conveyors rely on the power generated by power packs to carry out their functions.

  • Repair work in garage
Mechanics use power pack driven devices to lift heavy vehicles high enough to allow working beneath them.

  • Rides at amusement parks
Many thrilling rides at amusement parks work because of these power packs.

  • Braking systems
Most automobiles rely on these power packs to create effective braking systems.

  • Farming activities
Many activities in farming, for example, grass cutters and harvesters utilise the functioning of these power packs.

Despite the widespread applicability, one cannot randomly choose any power pack for any machine or application. Before choosing a cylinder for a power pack, the important considerations are its pressure rating, bore diameter, retract dimensions and mounting types. These specifications will determine if that particular cylinder is fit for use in a particular application.
